Charting her expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces of civil war and migra\u00adti\u00adon to her rise as a popu\u00adlar but con\u00adtro\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adal star, this docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry film traces the life of the sin\u00adger and pop icon M.I.A. Born in Sri Lanka to the foun\u00adder of the Tamil inde\u00adpen\u00addence move\u00adment, Mathangi \u2018Maya\u2019 Arulpragasam \u2013 ali\u00adas M.I.A. \u2013 fled to London with her mother and siblings at the age of nine. Her ori\u00adgi\u00adnal plan being to beco\u00adme a docu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry film\u00adma\u00adker, she retur\u00adned to Sri Lanka as an art stu\u00addent and began film\u00ading her fami\u00adly mem\u00adbers. Her jour\u00adney and her expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces with Sri Lanka\u2019s mili\u00adta\u00adry regime have shaped her artis\u00adtic and poli\u00adti\u00adcal atti\u00adtu\u00addes. She began making music and has deve\u00adlo\u00adped a cul\u00adtu\u00adre clash aes\u00adthe\u00adtic inspi\u00adred by street art, hip-hop and various migrant com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties in London that has lead to world\u00adwi\u00adde suc\u00adcess. However, her sup\u00adport for the Tamil rebels and her \u2018bad girl\u2019 iden\u00adti\u00adty have been harsh\u00adly cri\u00adti\u00adcis\u00aded by main\u00adstream media, poli\u00adti\u00adci\u00adans and con\u00adser\u00adva\u00adti\u00adve mem\u00adbers of the public. Using archi\u00adve mate\u00adri\u00adal from the last 22 years, most of which was shot by Maya hers\u00adelf, Steve Loveridge reve\u00adals how Maya uses pop music as a poli\u00adti\u00adcal mouth\u00adpie\u00adce and does not shy away from being an outsider.<\/p>\n
