The waters of a river flow pla\u00adcid\u00adly by. On its banks, time rewinds, brin\u00adging buried sto\u00adries to light. At the begin\u00adning of the 19th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, fur trap\u00adpers are not the only ones to ven\u00adture into the wilds of Oregon; there\u2019s also a taci\u00adturn cook, a loner who finds an able entre\u00adpre\u00adneur and fri\u00adend in a Chinese immi\u00adgrant. The two start a small trade in \u201coily cakes\u201d, which turns out to be a gre\u00adat suc\u00adcess in the rough West. The only catch: the raw mate\u00adri\u00adal they use is acqui\u00adred ille\u00adgal\u00adly. Director Kelly Reichardt co-wro\u00adte the screen\u00adplay with Jonathan Raymond, aut\u00adhor of the novel upon which the film is based. First Cow<\/em> con\u00adfirms her talent for tel\u00adling sto\u00adries of an America fil\u00adled with pro\u00admi\u00adse, far from the big cities. Like a Western, the film pays tri\u00adbu\u00adte to cha\u00adrac\u00adters on the mar\u00adgins of socie\u00adty who must take desti\u00adny into their own hands \u2013 only here, ins\u00adtead of guns, there\u2019s a spoon\u00adful of honey and a pail of milk. Thus, the\u00adse out\u00adlaws pre\u00adsent the fron\u00adtier, that screen onto which America pro\u00adjects its natio\u00adnal dreams, not as a place of eco\u00adno\u00admic or mate\u00adri\u00adal con\u00adquest, but as a mee\u00adting place. A sple\u00adndid alter\u00adna\u00adti\u00adve sce\u00adna\u00adrio, which today acqui\u00adres par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar civil and poli\u00adti\u00adcal significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
